Kevin Screpnechuk joined United Active Living's Board of Directors in February 2025, bringing decades of leadership experience in real estate, investment, and non-profit sectors. His career includes a significant tenure as Senior Vice President of Rental Operations at Boardwalk REIT, where he developed deep expertise in property management and strategic operations. He also served on Boardwalk’s Board of Directors for 10 years, gaining invaluable governance experience that now helps shape United Active Living’s strategic direction.

In addition to corporate leadership, Kevin is the Founder and President of Screpco Investments Corp., a family holding company with real estate assets and structured finance, and operating businesses in Alberta and Chicago, USA. Kevin’s business acumen is complemented by a strong commitment to social impact. He has served as a long-time director with Wood’s Homes and has also contributed his expertise to boards and committees with HomeSpace Society and the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter.

Kevin holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Finance from the University of Calgary and has maintained a real estate license for more than 30 years. He also holds Certified Property Manager and Certified Real Estate Finance designations from the Real Estate Institute of Canada.

Beyond his professional pursuits, Kevin is passionate about health and fitness and is an avid comic book collector. His combination of strategic vision, operational expertise, and community focus makes him a valuable contributor to United Active Living’s mission of fostering vibrant older adult communities.

Colin Kay brings extensive experience in private investments, energy, and business development to the United Board of Directors. Since 2018, he has served as Vice President of Private Investments at Bluesky Equities Ltd., where he oversees the firm’s private equity and real estate portfolios. As a senior team member, Colin plays a key role in shaping strategy and decision-making across Bluesky’s diverse portfolio of investments.

Colin began his career in the energy sector, achieving the positions of Senior Landman and Head of Business Development. He spent more than a decade in the energy sector, where he developed proficiency in acquisitions, operations, and negotiations, navigating and closing complex transactions.

A graduate of the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary, Colin remains committed to lifelong learning through ongoing postgraduate education. His financial expertise and strategic insight align well with United Active Living’s business strategy, fostering long-term sustainability and ongoing innovation in older adult living. He became a member of the Board of Directors in February 2025.

Outside of work, Colin enjoys spending time with his wife and three sons, playing golf and hockey, and skiing together. He also loves to travel and seek new experiences and perspectives.

It’s incredibly rewarding when an investment not only contributes to a thriving organization but also directly improves the lives of older adults. Growing up with all four of my grandparents in Calgary deeply shaped my appreciation for seniors. My 101-year-old grandmother has lived in older adult communities for more than two decades, giving me firsthand insight into what makes a community thrive. This personal connection fuels my commitment to ensuring older adults have engaging and fulfilling living experiences.

Praveen Joshi joined Lake Bonavista Village in April 2023. With a strong background in hospitality and formal education in hotel management, Praveen is focused on ensuring exceptional service delivery and fostering a vibrant, welcoming, and fun community for residents, families, and team members. Praveen has held senior roles in long term care and hotel operations and brings a wealth of leadership and operational expertise to his role at Lake Bonavista Village. In addition to being an active citizen through participation in municipal and provincial politics, Praveen is an avid CrossFit enthusiast and has also played competitively in badminton and ping pong. He enjoys cooking and brings a passion for excellence to both his personal and professional life.

Among Trinity Lodge’s many long-serving employees is Kim Ho, Executive Director, who joined the community in October 1998. Kim began her career in the dining room, a role she landed by chance, but quickly embraced. Over the years, she’s held positions in administration, accounting, and office management before being promoted to her current role in 2013. Along the way, Kim has earned credentials in food nutrition from SAIT and pursued accounting studies at Mount Royal University. She thrives in a role that balances the operational complexities of running a community with the deeply personal connections she builds with residents and team members. Her commitment to creating a nurturing environment applies in her personal life, as she mentors her young adult children toward bright and fulfilling futures. Kim also enjoys exploring new foods, with a particular love for spicy cuisines like Thai and Korean BBQ.

Building trust and meaningful connections is really important to me. Now that Trinity Lodge is part of the United Active Living family, I’m excited to work together as we continue to create a warm, welcoming community where every team member feels valued and every resident feels at home.

Glen joined The Lodge at Valley Ridge in January 2022, bringing a rich background in hospitality and a deep commitment to exceptional service. With a strong focus on aligning service delivery with resident expectations, Glen believes in the importance of feedback and collaboration to ensure residents remain at the heart of every decision. Prior to joining The Lodge, he held leadership roles at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, The Westin, The Palliser Hotel, and the Calgary Stampede, where he gained experience delivering world class hospitality. A graduate of SAIT’s Hotel & Restaurant Administration program, Glen has also pursued advanced practical training, including a Food & Beverage University program in Chicago. He enjoys spending time with his family, exploring Calgary’s dynamic culinary scene, and dabbling in nature photography.

Alan Chapple joined United Active Living in September 2024 as Executive Director of United’s Garrison Green community. He is responsible for overseeing all aspects of daily operations and leads the alignment of service delivery with United’s values and purpose. With a focus on ensuring smooth operations and a vibrant community for residents and team members, Alan brings a wealth of experience to his role. He holds a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from Royal Roads University. Before joining United, he served as Director of Operations at Carewest, where he honed his leadership skills in the older adult living and healthcare sectors. In his free time, Alan enjoys playing soccer and riding motorcycles, two hobbies that allow him to stay active and enjoy the outdoors.

As Executive Director of United Active Living Fish Creek, Amy McDonough oversees all aspects of daily operations in the community. She supports teams to align service delivery with United’s values, purpose, and quality objectives. With a background as a recreation therapist, Amy established a specialty in memory care in her former roles. She led training and program implementation of the Dementia Butterfly Model of Care with Intercare Southwood and worked as Memory Care Support with Covenant Care Canada. Prior to stepping into the role as community Executive Director, Amy led a team as Manager of United Minds, United Active Living’s proprietary memory care and cognitive support services. When not in the community, she practices active living in all forms: hiking, playing sports, and spending time with her family. Amy joined United in August, 2018.

United’s integrated philosophy is what drew me in. As we collectively put into practice a vision for bringing living to aging, I have seen first hand how new life experiences can positively impact older adults in this chapter in their lives.

Michael Kanovsky is founder and CEO of Sky Energy Corp., a private energy and investment company. He is also a founding partner and mentor of Creative Destruction Lab (Rockies).

Michael started his career in investment banking and has active investments in real estate and senior living, including as co-founder and director of United Active Living, as well as significant involvement and investments in the oil, gas, renewable, and power industries. He previously served as a founding director and shareholder of Northstar Energy Corporation, ARC Resources Ltd., North American Oilsands Ltd., Bonavista Petroleum Ltd., and Seven Generations Energy Ltd. Michael also served as a director of Devon Energy Corporation, Pure Technologies Ltd., TransAlta Corporation, Cequence Energy and Precision Drilling Inc.

Michael is an Emeritus Board member of the Ivey Business School and is currently a member of the Patrons’ Council of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation. Michael was former vice chair of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Board and former Alberta chair of the Young Presidents Organization. Michael is a Founder and Director of the Kanovsky Family Foundation, established in 2004.

Michael holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (Honours) degree in Mechanical Engineering from Queen’s University and a Masters of Business Administration from the Ivey Business School.

Growing up with a strong connection to older adults, Michael had his grandfather living with him since birth. His respect and appreciation for the wisdom and talents of seniors is reflected in his philanthropic support of several initiatives and organizations. He enjoys lifelong learning through his travels and has been married to his wife, Donna, for more than 45 years. Together, they enjoy spending time with their two sons, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter.

As a co-founder and director of United Active Living, Don Douglas has over three decades of leadership experience in the real estate and investment sectors. Since 1992, he has been the President of Jetstream Capital Corporation.

For more than thirty years, Don served as president and CEO of United Communities Inc. and its predecessor companies. Under his leadership, United Communities grew into a leading residential land developer. Don previously served as president of L.K. Resources, and vice-president of corporate development at Turbo Resources. Prior to that, he was involved in the investment industry.

Beyond his executive roles, Don has contributed his expertise as a director to numerous investment and management companies. His board memberships have included positions such as director of PFB Corporation, director of the Canadian Global Affairs Institute, past board member and chairman of the Delta Waterfowl Foundation, and a member of the World President’s Organization.

In the 1980s, Don saw senior living as a promising field due to an aging population seeking a broader range of lifestyle and care options. He helped lay the groundwork for an innovative, integrated model, where people weren't separated based on their care needs and could be supported with personalized services to maintain their independence longer. Today, Don’s role in the evolution of older adult living benefits several of his own family and friends, who enjoy life in United communities.

Don holds a Master of Business Administration degree from IMEDE Management Development Institute in Lausanne, Switzerland, and a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta. He has his pilot license and is an avid angler.

While an important component of United’s offering is its quality communities, the strength of its operations is at the core of its success. Solid operating fundamentals and a strong team propel the company as it establishes a foothold as a local industry leader.

Rob Carr oversees financial, accounting and IT strategies for United Active Living. As a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Professional Accountant with more than a decade of senior consulting experience with firms such as KPMG and MNP LLP, he brings a wealth of knowledge and varied industry expertise to the role. In addition to developing United’s annual operating and capital budget, Rob supports financial analysis for the company’s future growth objectives. Originally from Nova Scotia, he brought his love of hockey to the city when he moved to Calgary in 2008. Rob volunteers as an Assistant Coach with the Glenlake Minor Hockey Club and describes an ideal weekend: playing shinny with his sons in the winter, a round of golf in the summer, and dinner with his wife (and likely his favourite, spicy tacos). Rob joined United in March, 2022.

United doesn’t fit the mould of a traditional senior housing developer and operator. It’s a dynamic company that encourages its people to think outside the box. It’s an approach that’s become foundational to building a team that’s both versatile and dedicated.

Kera Redlack is a Registered Nurse with a Master of Health Studies and more than a decade of experiences as a teacher, practitioner, and leader in various health care roles. Kera focuses on resident wellbeing through oversight of United’s team of health and wellness professionals.  With a demonstrated connection between wellbeing of residents and engagement of a dedicated and passionate team, Kera also leads United’s employee engagement strategy. She’s a passionate advocate for a workplace that encompasses wellness and fun (her preferred title, in fact, being VP, Fun). Kera is an avid reader and adventure seeker with an active bucket list of travel goals. As a mother of two, she volunteers with Girl Guides of Canada and her children’s school council. She joined United in August, 2020.

I love that United ‘walks the walk’ – I feel confident this is a values-driven organization where resident and employee engagement and satisfaction are important measures of success. United challenges residents and employees to think outside the box: finding unique and innovative solutions to ongoing challenges is appreciated and encouraged.

Kelly Johansson’s business background, more than three decades of human resources experience, and passion for lifelong learning has positioned her as a dynamic and trusted leader in community operations and human resources. Kelly has held several roles within the organization including Executive Director of Operations and Director of Human Resources. Her unique combination of business acumen and genuine care for people has been fundamental to cultivating a workplace culture where performance and compassion coexist. Kelly is an active volunteer, serving as a member of the HR Partnership Council with Mount Royal University, Co-Chair on the board of Ski Jumping Canada, and ski jumping judge and technical delegate with the International Ski Federation. She enjoys paddle boarding (with her cat), hiking, and skiing. She joined United in January, 2015.

I take pride in providing leadership with a company focused on operational excellence by supporting residents and team members to become the best version of themselves. United is a place where there is so much potential being realized among residents and employees alike.

Kathy Cleary is a seasoned expert in long term and continuing care with more than two decades of experience in a variety of operations and leadership roles. She has also served as a volunteer board member, Vice President, and Treasurer with the Calgary Senior’s Housing Forum Society. As Vice President Strategic Projects, Kathy leads development and implementation of future-forward initiatives that build and fortify United’s position as a senior community of choice and thought leader in Calgary. Her work includes reimagining the company’s culinary strategy, fostering a culture of innovation, and mentoring United’s aspiring leaders. When not in our communities, Kathy enjoys sampling new Calgary restaurants with family and friends. She’s also been known to indulge in a good scary movie. Kathy joined United in August, 2019.

Arianne Brady brings more than a decade of experience to United, leading marketing and communication strategies in various industries including tourism and hospitality, hotel franchise, corporate services, and non-profit. In her current role, she oversees United’s marketing and sales strategy, brand development, and communications initiatives. Arianne has a proven track record and passion for creative storytelling to captivate audiences and attract new customers. When she’s not capturing the stories of United, she can be found with her family, reading a book, or playing outdoors – and as an avid multitasker, often all three at once. She’s an active community volunteer, enjoying her current role as board director with Norfolk Housing Association. Arianne joined United in August, 2022.

Prior to joining the United team Kim was CEO of Horizon Housing Society, a non-profit that develops and operates affordable and supported housing. During her tenure, the company’s housing portfolio grew by more than 50 per cent and she became a leading advocate for increased investment in affordable housing both locally and nationally. From 1997 to 2007 Kim gained extensive leadership experience as an executive member with Boardwalk REIT.

Kim holds a BA (Honours) in Political Science from St. Francis Xavier University. She’s a director of the United Active Living Foundation and a member of the Trellis Foundation board of directors. In 2022, she received the Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal to honour her work as an influential community leader. In 2010, she was named one of Calgary’s Top 40 Under 40. Outside of work, Kim is known for her love of exploring Calgary’s many restaurants with a particular fondness for Italian staples. She enjoys travelling, learning about different cultures and engaging in conversations that expand her understanding of people and the world.
