United’s philosophy is supported by the wellness model – as defined by the International Council on Active Aging. There are seven elements of wellness that impact on aging: spiritual, emotional, intellectual, physical, environmental, social and vocational.
United believes in a holistic approach to aging, a combination of all these aspects of the human experience. Our Integrated Wellness Team looks at every aspect of an individual’s life to help them achieve their personal objectives.
Creativity is one of the best ways to unravel the complexity of our emotions. There are many activities, such as painting, sculpture and music where residents can express themselves, sharing aspects of their inner lives. Projects are often in partnership with Alberta College of Art and Design and Mount Royal University.
Calgary is blessed with wonderful cultural attractions, from museums to theatres. United offers a varied program of visits throughout the year to see exhibitions, opera and dramatic productions. As well, there is a program of visiting lectures by local experts, bringing culture and history into the community.
As much as possible, older adults should maintain their physical abilities. United offers many outlets for able residents, including dancing and nature walks.
Almost every activity at United is social … but some are more social than others. Movie nights, card games, or just a get-together in the bistro to watch the hockey game — there’s always a buzz in the community.
They say that a mind is the best investment. At United, we pay very close attention to exercising the motor skills and brain function that keep us all alert and happy. This includes our United Minds program for those with dementia or stroke injury.
Spirituality doesn’t have to mean religion, though religious celebrations and pastoral guidance are available at our communities. As well, residents enjoy yoga, meditation and quiet contemplation in our gardens, alone or as part of a group.
Buildings are designed for wellness using eco-friendly products, services, process and design.
