Al Gething Receives Korean Ambassador for Peace Medal
Al Gething, who lives at United’s Fish Creek community, has received a high honour from the Korean government. Al served on board the Canadian Navy destroyer HMCS Athabaskan from 1950 to 1951 during the Korean War. Al was an able seaman stoker mechanic in the engine room. The Korean Ambassador for Peace Medal is an expression of appreciation from the Korean government to service men and women who served in the Korean War.
“It is my utmost honour to be able to award the Ambassador for Peace Medal to Al Gething today,” said Korean Consul General Song Hae-young, in presenting the medal to Al. “When the Korean War broke out, Canada responded by sending 26,000 troops to our defence. We owe so much to the Canadian veterans. They forged the strong bond that exists between Korea and Canada. I express my deepest gratitude for Al Gething’s service which has had an everlasting impact on the Korean people. So many brave young men answered the call to fight for the freedom and democracy of Korea.”
“It is a real honour to receive the medal,” said Al. “It tells me that other countries were welcoming and proud that Canadians were there to help them.”
“We are very proud of my dad, and very grateful for this ceremony,” said daughter Kathie Gellatly. “He doesn’t often speak of his experiences in the war so this is pretty special,” said daughters Pennie Ivanco and Sandie Cheney, who were at United for the ceremony.
United honours the achievements of its residents through special events such as this one for Al. Everyone has contributed a wealth of experience to the world and many are keen to share those experiences, which deepens the feeling of community, engages others in discussions, and triggers friendships. Their involvement really gives the programming an extra special touch.
