Christmas Card Reflects Resident’s Love for the Mountains
While some Christmas traditions may be difficult to hold this year, others help make the season a little more enjoyable. The Christmas trees are up at both of United’s communities, the hallways and doors are decorated, and the annual Christmas card has been sent out.
“I’ve been painting since high school,” said Fish Creek resident Margaret Agnew, who was chosen to produce this year’s card. “I haven’t painted much since 2000, but I started again in February when COVID hit. I’ve done five paintings since then. I tend to paint when inspiration strikes, producing several works at one time, then I put the brushes away until the next time.
“I’ve always loved the mountain scenery, especially the Rockies in Banff, Kananaskis and Pincher Creek,” she explained. “Every spring and fall a group of us from the Calgary Sketch Club would spend a week in the mountains sketching, photographing and painting. The picture used for this card was inspired by sketches and photos that were taken years ago. The painting is called Early Snow and is acrylic on canvas. It includes the Three Sisters mountains and a cabin in the woods.”
“United really supports the artistic and creative arts. I would like to thank the creative facilitators Jeff Chan, Chantel Traub and Amy Bouchard for their encouragement and assistance. They have amazingly creative ideas and have encouraged everyone taking part to explore their hidden talents. Fine pieces of art are being created all the time. I am grateful to come back to my love of painting after a 20-year absence and the COVID restrictions.”
The Christmas cards have gone out to employees, residents and families.
“Thank you for the honour you have given me by letting me share this picture on the 2020 Christmas card,” said Margaret. “Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to all of you!”
