Young at Heart: Hertha Reich Celebrates as a Centenarian
United Active Living Garrison Green resident Hertha Reich hit a remarkable milestone this month, celebrating her 100th birthday. Residents, United Active Living team members and family members joined in the festivities to congratulate her and wish her well.
Along with a special birthday cake, the United team arranged for a petting zoo and filled the room with balloons and streamers.
“I’ll never forget today,” said Hertha. “I never expected to be greeted for my birthday in this way!”
A corner chair was set in place, marked by colourful balloons highlighting her birthday and one of her most impressive paintings.
In fact, Hertha is a prolific artist, who has painted more than 200 works since moving to Garrison Green 11 years ago. A special show of her works was held this past May. She began painting 70 years ago in the family home in Winnipeg. When she moved to Garrison Green, her interests and talents expanded with the help of the professional artists in the art studio.
Hertha remains young at heart and continues to visit the art studio regularly to pursue new projects. When asked how she feels about being a centenarian, she responded: “Heavens no! I don’t feel 100 at all,” she said.
Hertha had some great advice for those striving to follow in her footsteps. “Eat good food. Do things that you enjoy doing. Use your imagination and have a great attitude.”
Her daughter Denyce Lundeen spends a lot of time with her mom. She commemorated Hertha’s impressive collection of artworks with two books.
“Mom has never been sick,” said Denyce. “She has a very positive attitude. Part of mom’s success has to go to the employees and programming at Garrison Green. Their support and encouragement have meant the world to us. When we first saw the art studio, we were sold and it’s been the best decision. We’re convinced that a big reason mom has reached such a significant milestone is because of the community here. The art studio keeps her going and the staff are so supportive.”
Denyce, when asked about Hertha’s longevity, said, “It was coming here. It’s the perfect place for her.”
For those who have not tried the arts before, Hertha has a few words of advice. “Start off simple. The world is your oyster so keep trying new ideas. Don’t give up. Keep trying different arts until you find one that works for you. I’m always learning new things, and that’s important to stay young and healthy.
“It’s never too late to try something new,” said Hertha. “Take your time and it will come.”
Happy birthday Hertha!
